03.Jun.10 New Run in England beginners group helps Eastleigh Running Club lift off!

Eastleigh Running Club is thriving, and according to their club website, their training venues would include the moon, if only they could get there!  A Run in England beginners group has been set up and the club has recently benefitted from a move from their previous base at a local school to Fleming Park Leisure Centre.  The Leisure Centre is surrounded by football pitches, but beyond these is a former golf course which is a haven for runners.  On the request of the club, there is now a 400m slightly undulating grass track, marked out by DC Leisure, which the club members use for speedwork.

The club’s Head Coach is Kevin Royle and he was keen for the club to benefit from the England Athletics Flying Coach scheme, sponsored by Sweatshop, whereby a visit from an experienced coach is arranged for the club.  Colin Goater undertook the visit on Thursday 27th May and 6 coaches/leaders and 27 athletes attended, utilizing the track for an extended interval session, graded into three versions, for the athletes involved.  Colin was clearly impressed by the numbers of athletes involved and the interest shown in the session by the coaches attending.

The track session (pictured thumbnail) was just one part of the programme on offer that evening, as one group took to the roads and another group of thirty took part in a Run in England beginners' group led by Sue O’Dowd (pictured below).  The club has run beginners' groups in the past, but has now trained up several leaders on the Leadership and Running Fitness courses so they have plenty of leaders to support the varying levels of ability.
